Protect Your Vehicle During Pothole Season

By this time of year, most of us are sick and tired of winter. The long, dark winter days with the endless sub-freezing temperatures and record snow fall have made us look forward to the warmer temperatures of Spring. However, with these warmer temperatures comes the dreaded potholes, which are formed when moisture in the road surface goes thru multiple freezing/thawing cycles and the material under the pavement finally gives way to form a crater.

Now is the time to have your vehicle inspected by a professional. The relentless compression and rebound from your suspension system driving in, around, and through potholes causes wear to these components and your tires. The shocks and struts, front end parts, and tires are working extremely hard to keep your vehicle under control and trying to smooth the ride as much as possible. But damage can occur….the sudden jarring of a large, unexpected pothole will not only throw your vehicle out of alignment, but can also cause hidden damage to your tires and front end suspension.

Your technician can inspect for this damage and look for worn front end parts. They will also check for uneven tire wear, cuts or abrasions to the tires, and leaking fluid from shocks and struts. A complete under vehicle inspection is recommended as even the exhaust system could have been damaged. And while the vehicle is on the lift, now is also the time to have your brakes inspected.  Based on your mileage and driving habits, might as well have an oil change done too.
